Welcome to Bowen Island Learn to Sail Society

Our Sailing Heritage

The Bowen Island Learn to Sail Society (L2S) is a friendly, family-oriented society established in 2026 to assume the Learn to Sail program from the Bowen Island Yacht Club, which has provided a sail training program for over 20 years. All staff are experienced, trained, and certified by Sail Canada.

Students enjoy quality sail instruction in a fun and safe environment. Come sail with us and experience the exhilaration of learning to sail!

Summer 2026

This summer the L2S will be offering two different certification programs: WetFeet and CANSail. Both these courses introduce new sailors to the basics of sailing and offer experienced sailors many opportunities to advance their abilities. Students learn new skills in small classes using games and interactive lessons on land and on water to master these new abilities. WetFeet is specifically designed for younger children aged 7 to 10. Our CANSail is intended for older children above the age of 10.

Private sailing lessons and programs are provided upon request. Put together a group of interested adults or set out for a day of learning how to sail with the family! We are happy to work with you to accommodate your schedule and skill level.

Ryan Champoux

Sailing has been a huge part of my life since I was 7. I competed in the ILCA class at an international level throughout high school as a member of the WVYC Race Team. My top finish is first place Sail West. This is my 6th year coaching sailing. I am a second year student at UVic. I love summers on Bowen.

Jonah Harrison

My name is Jonah and I grew up on Bowen Island. I began sailing when I was 9 years old and I have been a sailing coach for 3 years. I love teaching sailing and exploring Howe Sound. Outside of sailing I am studying Forest Science at the University of British Columbia where I compete for the UBC Nordic Skiing team. I have been a member of Cypress Mountain Ski Patrol for two years and I am just starting my career with the BC Ambulance Service.  If you see me out and about don't hesitate to say "hi" and ask any questions.

Gavin Champoux

This is my second year coaching but I have been a sailor and volunteer with the Bowen sailing program for many years. I was on WVYC’s R.S. Feva race team and competed in local regattas. I won first place in the Commodore’s Cup Regatta with my fellow coach, Henry Sinclair. I love hiking and fishing.
